Descriptions

In one sentence

Kondavo is a checkers and draughts game for the browser, Android and iOS with five separately implemented rule sets, rated online games on a server-kept clock, and a computer opponent that works offline.

In three sentences

Kondavo puts English checkers, International draughts and the Brazilian, Spanish and Turkish variants on one board, each implemented to its own rules. Online games are paired by rule set and rating and run on a clock the server keeps, with daily cups and a weekly league. Offline, the computer plays at eight levels, and a hint system shows a strong move in any position.

In a paragraph

Most checkers apps ship one rule set and call the rest options. Kondavo treats the five most played variants as different games: English checkers with short-range kings, International draughts on the 10×10 board with flying kings and maximum capture, its 8×8 Brazilian cousin, Spanish checkers, and Turkish draughts, where pieces move straight instead of diagonally. Each rule set has its own rating and leaderboard. Rated online games run on a clock the server keeps, so a dropped connection never decides a game. Players enter free daily cups and climb a weekly league. Offline there is a computer opponent with eight levels, hints, and pass-and-play on one phone, and every finished game exports as PDN, the notation draughts clubs use. The same game runs in a browser at kondavo.com/play, with nothing to install. The interface ships in ten languages.

What sets it apart

  • Five rule sets, implemented separately - down to which square is playable and what a king may do, with a rating per rule set.
  • Turkish draughts - orthogonal movement on every square of the board, a variant most apps leave out.
  • A clock the server keeps - nobody wins on a stuttering connection, and changing a phone's clock gains nothing.
  • PDN in and out - finished games leave the app in the notation clubs and analysis tools already read.
  • The same game in a browser - not a cut-down web demo beside a real app, but one build of one game, so a reader can try the thing being reviewed in one click.
